Heads of the Valleys

Wentworth House Partnership carried out a CAT III design check and value engineering exercise for a temporary reinforced slope to carry piling plant and crawler cranes at Retaining Wall No31.

To deliver this project, we used 2D limit equilibrium analysis, combined with 2D and 3D FE analysis for the design. We were able to offer a significant reduction in the strength of the geo-grid reinforcement vs original scheme.

We also carried out a detailed CAT III check of a temporary soil nailed cutting at Retaining Wall No14, taking into account an existing and developing deep seated slip within a thin band overlying rock head. We then assessed construction sequence impact on live road settlement.

For the new Gateway Arch Bridge, Wentworth House Partnership carried out a CAT III check of the bridge installation and designed temporary cuttings and embankments up to 25m height. Techniques used included gabion wall, Geocell and geo-grid reinforced soil wall, soil nailed wall with hard and soft facings, and sheet piling used to stabilize slopes / cuttings. We also assessed the stability of the existing retaining walls, as well as the slope stability of the existing embankment under a 1350t crawler crane surcharge to enable bridge lifts.
